Freshman Star Kate Peters Transferring Schools In Oregon

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Kate Peters, one of the top ninth-grade distance runners in the country, is transferring from Lincoln of downtown Portland to Lake Oswego High, which is eight miles south of the city.

Peters enjoyed a breakout freshman cross country season at Lincoln. She placed second at the Oregon 6A state championship meet and then took third at the NXR Northwest regional and led Forest Park XC (Lincoln) to its first Nike Cross Nationals berth. Peters finished ninth in the national championship race.

With the family's move to Lake Oswego, she will be coached by Steve Edwards, the husband of running legend Shalane Flanagan. She is set to go to her new school Jan. 28, which is the start of the new academic term.

“I'm super excited to go to Lake Oswego High School and be coached by Steve Edwards! He is a really good fit for me," Peters said.

Peters has ties to Flanagan because she has come up through the Nike Bowerman Track Club Youth Program.

Peters plans to run an indoor 3,000 meters Feb. 22 at the Washington High School Invitational in Seattle. She also has the Shamrock Half Marathon in her sights, March 15, in Portland.

Lincoln coach Eric Dettman said he hopes for Peters' continued success.

"I'm super thankful for the contributions Kate and her family made to the program," he said. "I wish nothing but the best for Kate and her future."
